December 2013 saw the beginning of the calla lily season. There has been a lovely (but limited) range of colours and great quality.
December saw us receiving the first bunches of dahlias started (mid month) and lisianthus are in full bloom! There has been a new local grower of lisianthus and the quality has been lovely with none of the squashed blooms we have had to put up with in lisianthus coming longer distances in boxes.
Marshmallow arums are available, with beautiful large heads and lovely colour.
With the hot weather, peonies have finished, although managed to find some for weddings imported from Tasmania. The colour range was limited.
Davids Austin roses are still available, although the numbers have been low due to bad weather in NSW. Glasshouse roses have been beautiful, with a reds scarce at the beginning of the month but plentiful mid month!
Iris has been available, but opens up fast in the warmer weather.
Lilies have been readily available, with the usual range of asiatic and oriental lilies and hybrids. November lilies are, of course, lovely and available, and now called Christmas lilies!
Singapore orchids are still available. The phalaenopsis have been stunning, with a lovely colour range. Locally grown cymbidium orchids have finished but imported cymbidium orchids are around.
Our usual hydrangea supplier has finished this month. There has still been some available at the markets.
King protea, sea holly, leaucadendron, banksia, pincushions, tetranuts and kangaroo paw has been available. Blushing bride, flannel flower and erica has not been around, and I’ve had trouble getting grevillea. There has only been a limited range of banksia.
Delphinium and snap dragons have been beautiful. The hybrid delphinium has started giving us a great colour range in purples, mauves and blues. They have not been as large as last year, maybe due to the weather. Stock is now unavailable.
Gloriosa lilies have started just in time for Christmas.
Carnations, alstromeria, babies breath, gerbera and chrysanthemum have been around.
Bruneii has been available all month, but not much berzilli. Hypericum has started. Vibernum and camellia is back and looks good. Magnolia has been lovely.
The Christmas foliages are now available - Christmas bush, holly and spruce, and with the smell of glitter spray in the air at the shop, it feels like Christmas is here!
