Tulips are undeniably stunning and are one of our favourite flowers for a reason. They are incredibly beautiful with their smooth silky petals and are just completely joyous to look at! We look forward to the Australian Tulip season every year and can't get enough of them!
On average, your tulip flowers should last anywhere from 5 to 14 days. This does depend on various factors such as the tulip variety, environmental conditions, and care practices. The delicate petals of tulip flowers are sensitive to sunlight, temperature, and the natural aging process, contributing to their transient yet breathtaking display.
Tulip fun fact: Tulips are the only flowers that will continue to grow when they are cut which is why you will notice the stems getting longer in your vase.
HOW TO PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOU CUT TULIPS
There are a few things you can do to significantly extend their vase life, allowing you to enjoy their beauty a bit longer.
1 - Fresh Cut and Clean Water:
Trim the tulip stems at a 45-degree angle before placing them in your vase. This creates a fresh cut, enhancing the stems ability to absorb water.
Use a clean vase and fill it with fresh, room-temperature water. About 5cm of water will be enough and refill as necessary to avoid saturating the stems too much. Clean water helps prevent the growth of bacteria.
Refresh the water in the vase every two days to maintain cleanliness.
2 - Remove Excess Foliage:
Remove any leaves that will be submerged in water to prevent bacterial growth. This also directs the tulip’s energy towards blooming.
3 - Place in a Cool Location:
Tulips prefer cooler temperatures. Keep them away from direct sunlight, heaters and other heat sources to slow down the aging process and help them stay fresher for longer.
4 - Use Flower Preservative:
Adding a commercial flower preservative to the water can help nourish the tulips and extend their bloom. This is usually available from your local florist and at Poetry in Flowers we give you a sachet of flower preservative with every purchase. Follow the instructions on the preservative packet for the best results.
5 - Refrigerate Overnight:
For an extra boost, place the tulips in the refrigerator overnight. The cool temperature helps them conserve energy and slows down the blooming process.
6 - Avoid Crowded Arrangements:
Allow enough space between tulip stems in the vase. Overcrowded vases can contribute to faster aging and petal drop.
7 - Rehydrate Drooping Tulips:
If tulips start to droop prematurely you can recut the stems and place them in warm water for a few hours. This can revive them and extend their time in the vase.
Tulips are a beautiful flower to enjoy at every stage of their vase life. As they age, their appearance transforms at each stage, from tight buds to fully open blooms. Even as petals start to drop, tulips maintain an alluring charm.
